Robert L. Asprin's Thieves’ World, Complete Sanctuary Adventure Pack, Chaosium, 1981.
Chaosium’s Thieves’ World boxed set was an extraordinary collaboration by the creators of many different role-playing systems from different companies.
In his essay “Full Circle” which begins the Players’ Guide booklet, Asprin described how literature inspired role-playing, and role-playing influenced his creation of the Thieves’ World shared setting for short story authors, which in turn was now the basis of a new role-playing campaign.
Instead of creating a campaign only for Chaosium’s own games, or providing generic descriptions that would leave game masters scrambling to convert stats, they brought in Dave Arneson, Marc Miller, and other designers to convert Sanctuary’s characters for 9 different game systems: AD&D, Adventures in Fantasy, Chivalry & Sorcery, DragonQuest, D&D, The Fantasy Trip, RuneQuest, Traveller, and Tunnels & Trolls.
Lynn Abbey, Poul Anderson, Robert Asprin, Andrew Offut, and other authors from the story series contributed descriptions of characters and the setting.
